Pitfall Classic Postmortem With David Crane

First things first – Happy 100th post!  Woot!  I can’t believe that I’ve already done a hundred of these suckers.  Pretty rad if I do say so myself.

Alright, now that that is out of the way – here is a cool video of David Crane speaking from GDC 2011 about a little game he made called PITFALL.  During Q&A at the end, he mentions an Atari emulator and development tool called Stella.  Feel free to take this as a sign that you should go and develop NEW games for the Atari 2600.

Incredible 8-bit-esque sound effect creator available for free!

Try it online here (and you can save the sounds as .wav files). This version was built by Thomas Vian from superflashbros.net, who also released the source code for AS3 !!!  This makes me want to use this code to build a midi-style sequencer to use for Flash games.  Unfortunately I don’t have any time to write that anytime soon – but I would give a hearty hug to anyone out there who wants to write that tool!

This tool was adapted from Tomas Pettersson’s original application.  You can also find a copy ported to the iPhone by Chris Gassib.

Free or Inexpensive Graphic Software

Here is a list of free or inexpensive graphics software posted on petshopboxstudio.com (did I mention I love this site).

Of them, I’ve used only GIMP – and I can attest that it is excellent.  I use Photoshop a lot at work and used to use Photoshop Elements at home (the inexpensive, stripped down version also made by Adobe), but at this point I use GIMP.  I am a bit excited to maybe try a couple of the others.

Monocle Engine

I just saw this demo for an open source game engine sill under development called the Monocle Engine.  This is being built by Alec Holowka and Matt Thorson, and is very cool looking. Seeing independent folks create stuff like this is pretty inspiring to me.

Corona

Corona is a tool for developing iphone games.  I had heard of Corona before, but this video really flaunted it’s ease of use and pre-written function directories.

That being said, if you do any scripting at all – it is pretty cool to watch.
